Thanks for
being the 'on book' person!
Thanks for helping us!
You really are a valuable part of the
drama rehearsal.
Your job?
Read the lines silently as the actors
recite them.
Sometimes
keeping 'with' the actors in the script may be difficult.
They
may jump around in the script some, (especially at first).
But, try
not to interrupt for the small things,
(only
the major ones like skipping pages, etc.)
Don't criticize or pick at minor
phrases, missed words, etc.
As
we get closer to performance, there will be time to 'fine
tune' the lines.
Try to stay with them at all times.
Oops! Did I say that
twice? Hmmmmmm!
If an actor stops and can't
remember a line, do not volunteer it.
Really.
I'm not kidding. Wait. Wait for an hour if you have too.
Wait until the actor calls out 'line'.
Then,
don't read the whole line, only the first two or three words.
Hopefully that will get the actor started, (but if that doesn't work,
the actor will ask for more).
Why not volunteer the line when it's
obvious that they can't remember it?
Because...sometimes
the actors will eventually come up with the line on their own.
Because...sometimes,
the actor is pausing for dramatic affect.
Because...sometimes
actors can become flustered when
they feel the pressure to "come in" with the line right away.
It's
hard to remember lines. Especially in the beginning. We
don't want them worrying that you will 'jump in' with the
line if they pause the slightest.
We
want the actors to trust you, (and not feel scolded by you).
After
all, we both know that you are here to help!
Thanks!
